Online fashion blog Jezebel reported on Monday that an editor of French magazines Jalouse and L’Officiel had slapped one of Zac Posen’s PR executives at a NYFW show on Sunday night . Frankly I’m not surprised. Anyone who has been to NYFW (or any fashion week for that matter) knows that in the fifteen minutes before the start of a show the tension is as thick as Karl Lagerfeld’s glasses. That’s because it is during those fleeting moments that the editors, fashion buyers and celebrities flex their fashion muscle.
Where you sit. Who you are sitting next. It all matters and I have no doubt there are long negotiations that take place in the lead-up to these events about who will sit where. So imagine being an editor of two of France’s leading fashion mags, turning up 5 minutes before the show and realizing the someone in your seat is not moving and (heaven forbid) you will have to stand!
There is nothing more humiliating for a would be, could be or probably is a fashionista than being handed a ticket stamped with the words “Standing”.
Trust me it happened to my colleague and I a few years back. As some of the first NYFW bloggers, we were given access and had sailed through all the key checkpoints – we even feigned indifference at the paparazzi taking photos of us….As we grabbed our tickets at the counter – one young girl who had snapped us on the way in turned to her friend proudly and whispered, “Wow I got a photo of her – she MUST be someone….”
Her friend – who had obviously got a good look at our tickets turned back to her and in a very audible New York City twang replied, “She’s “Standing”….she’s no-one . “ Don’t you just love NY?
