We first spotted design dynamo Kacey Devlin at the UTS Fashion Graduate show late last year, and rather than take some much deserved time off, she’s just gone from strength to strength. Taking out the runner up prize in the highly competitive 2011 $10,000 NSW Business Chamber Industry Award (Textile, Clothing and Footwear), she’s now jetting off to New Zealand for the iD International Emerging Designer Awards. Devlin is one of twenty-eight finalists from seven countries to have been selected to show at this year’s prestigious event in Dunedin, and if successful, the event could see her awarded with $5000 and the opportunity to show her collection at the iD Dunedin Fashion Show.
Her collection, titled Inception, explores the wearer’s relationship with clothing and the space between the body and a garment. A combination of sustainable fibers, silk and wool blends, sheer meshes and abstract photographic prints, the collection is all about movement and the senses. Creating a fashion film in collaboration with ABSORB to showcase the collection, Devlin reveals “Inception is about bodies… it’s bodies that my clothing speaks to and the body is a central point of the film.” A smoke filled room with a suspended model and dramatic soundtrack act as a fitting backdrop for her designs, which are layered, wrapped and knotted around the models body.
And it seems we aren’t the only ones to notice this fresh talent. The tastemakers over at RUSSH Magazine jumped at the chance to debut the film, exclusively presenting it on their website. Having worked with influential Australian labels Christopher Esber, Ginger & Smart and Gorman, we suggest you sit up and take notice, as this is one emerging designer that’s sure to go far.
