Preparing for the winter dry: top moisturising tips

Don’t you hate that winter dry?  It just creeps up on you.  One minute your skin looks fine and hydrated, then the next thing you know you putting out fires with red hot patches of scaly skin appearing on your cheeks, forehead, neck etc.  That’s when you know you’ve left it too late and getting you skin back to normal will require more than just your usual hydrating mask.

That’s why I like to prepare my skin for the winter dry by stocking up on super hydrating products and getting myself into a moisturising routine that helps me avoid the drama of overdrying.  It might surprise you but your first line of defence is your exfoliant.   A gentle, non-drying exfoliant is what you are looking for, I like endota’s Aloe & Jojoba Face Scrub, or Elixia’s Crystal-Derm Exfoliator.  Both help you remove any flaky dry skin sitting on the surface without drying it out.

Next, I like to tone the skin but I find most toners are very drying.  Dr Perricone’s, SUPER Clarifying Activator is one exception.  Described as a, “super-charged, liquid treatment prep that delivers a straight shot of antioxidants and targeted actives to each and every pore” the green apple fragrance is immediately soothing and refreshing.  I like to keep one of these at my desk and splash some on my skin in the afternoon after lunch.  It’s a great pick-me-up.

Next I like to slather on a deep hydrating masque.  Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Masque is an oil free cooling gel which I find  immediately calms dry red skin and restores moisture.  It’s packed with calming extracts of Rosemary, Hops, Cucumber and Arnica and is fragrance free.  With vitamins A, C and E and Pro-Vitamin B5, this product is extremely nourishing on the skin.  Because it is so gentle, Dermalogica also recommend it’s use around the sensitive eye area.

Finally, I like to finish off with a few deep moisturisurers.  Purist’s Pure Therapy Intensive Moisture Repair Gel is small tube which packs a big punch.  Recommended by dermatologists in the treatment of excema, I like to use this on those small red patches of skin that are like little hot spots on my skin.

For the rest of my skin I use Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, a fragrance free, gentle, light weight product that delivers 24 hours of moisture.  This product helps protect the skin against the harsh elements with Glycoprotein extracted from microoganisms sourced from sea glaciers and Imperata Cylindrica – a plant which grows in the Australian desert which possesses excellent water retention properties.

So ladies don’t wait until it’s too late, get your skin prepped for winter – because somehow, I think it’s going to come early this year!
