Want to dress like a royal? Look no further than the designs of Sarah Janks. The South African born, London trained fashion designer’s career is studded with regal connections.
She landed her first job at Kashkets — the tailors responsible for the dashing suits worn by William and Harry at the royal wedding. After perfecting the technical side of fashion design Sarah went on to work with esteemed brands such as Roland Mouret, Jonathan Saunders and Jenny Packham; a designer favoured by Kate Middleton.
If it’s up to the standards of the Duchess of Cambridge (or catches Harry’s eye) then count me in! Lucky for us here in Australia Sarah has left London and opened her flagship store in Sydney. No longer working for a major label Sarah has been able to focus all her creative energy into her own project – a ready to wear bridal collection.
Creating her own collection has been a process that Sarah describes as “really liberating”. In fact the most difficult aspect of launching the collection (in between moving countries and being a mother) has been editing it.
The pieces in her debut collection, ‘TEMPUS’, are classic yet, with each design, she has slipped in a little surprise or whimsical detail that sets it apart. Recurring themes are slinky bias cuts, well placed sheer fabric, and pressed fabric flowers. Cascading fabric is paired with an elasticised bodice giving the dresses fluidity without sacrificing the perfect silhouette.
She may have moved but Sarah’s association with aristocracy continues. She is the exclusive bridal stockist in Australia for Vivian Sheriff – Kate Middleton’s favourite hat designer.
Though the collection is ready to wear each garment appears to be tailor made. This is no doubt a reflection of her impeccable technical training. Sarah maintains that beautiful design is a combination of “fitting, cutting and creativity”. A designer that excels at all three like Sarah really is a rarity. Want a slice of this wedding cake?
