Some people really are over achievers. Take James Franco for instance. Not content as a mere Hollywood heart throb, the Oscar nominated actor and Ph.D student also writes, models, paints, directs and now, photographs. His latest venture into fashion photography see’s him capture top model Agyness Deyn among others for the July issue of US Elle Magazine.
Titled ‘Chateaux Dreams’, the fashion story explores James Dean’s iconic Rebel Without a Cause look, styling Agyness in androgynous denim and leather. The fashion spreads release finally explains why Franco and Agyness were photographed together in a car some months back, quietening rumours of their supposed romance.
The black and white images have a soft, retro feel to them, evoking a sense of nostalgia and old America. While he’s no Steven Meisel, Franco’s images are engaging and cinematic. Described as having “an unusually high metabolism for productivity”, his multi talented skill set reminds us that some creative spirits cannot be contained, certainly not within the confines of one discipline. In a world of actors slash singers slash designers, cynicism as to whether individuals should cross over into other areas is almost rightly justified. For every successful James Franco, there’s a not so talented starlet putting their name on everything from perfume to an environmentally friendly line of toilet seats.
Other stars that have successfully bridged the gap between one hit wonder to genuine creative vary in their skill sets. Take super successful music producer Pharrell Williams for example. One part of the hottest music production duo in the world, The Neptunes, Pharrell stepped out from behind the scenes and into the limelight with his group N.E.R.D and solo collaborations. He runs two successful fashion lines, designs furniture and sunglasses, yet has 2 Grammy’s sitting a top his mantle. Phew. Another multi tasker? German born model Heidi Klum. Not happy with being just a pretty face, Klum has moved onto bigger and better things, able to add actress, TV host, businesswoman, fashion designer, television producer and mother to her ever expanding CV.
All this cross discipline pollination can get a little bit confusing, so the main thing to remember with multi talented celebs is that with their endless desire for production, their creative output is prolific. Our tip? Keep your eyes on Franco, he’s sure to do something interesting.
