If the best way to judge a café’s success is the how busy it is then it’s fair to say that at Espresso 3121 in Richmond Victoria you’re on to a winner. From Monday to Friday, it is filled with a constant stream of people who have found it despite the fact that it is hidden in a laneway amongst a maze of Richmond’s warehouses.
Judging purely by name it’s a given that the team at Espresso 3121 know their stuff about coffee. They are constantly excited to introduce a new single origin from regions such as Brazil and Guatemala.
This week, they celebrated their third anniversary with a Nicaraguan single origin extracted by their new, fully manual Marzocco Linea EE, which they call a “piece of Italian engineering genius.”
Coffee experts would know that these elements come together to create an amazing taste. However, for those (like me) who require layman’s terms, this roughly translates to ‘damn good coffee’.
While the main focus of the café is to deliver a top quality product, people do not keep coming back purely for this reason. The staff at Espresso 3121 cannot be faulted. They are friendly, knowledgeable, talkative and welcoming which always means a lovely start to the day for the media, marketing and advertising crowd who work in the area.
The space itself is a converted warehouse, open plan with a high ceiling, exposed brick walls and plenty of natural light. Customers gather on wooden stools around two large communal tables.
Espresso 3121’s food menu is simple, pre-made sandwiches and cakes for those on the run and a selection of toasties and soups for those on a longer lunch. The menu highlight for me is the tuna melt which, in all it’s simplicity, I cannot recreate at home – no matter how hard I try!
However, the number one draw card for me would have to be the iced coffee. A common item served at most cafés but it’s certainly one that can be hit or miss. At Espresso 3121 in Richmond Victoria it’s undoubtedly a hit. It combines their excellently executed coffee with delicious vanilla icecream, although I don’t dare ask how many scoops. It’s creamy perfection, and my favourite Friday afternoon treat – the perfect way to end the working week.
