The days are getting hotter which means long days at the beach followed by longer mojito filled nights, oh summer how we’ve missed you! But unfortunately while we’re sun worshippers by day, the heat can be a little less welcome come night time. If you don’t have air conditioning and have been experiencing some heat induced insomnia since the arrival of the summer months or if your body clock hasn’t quite bounced back since New Years Eve then instead of counting sheep head out and explore some of Sydney’s 24 hour offerings.
Maisy’s Café: This café is perfect for those nights when you’ve been having a great social dinner at a restaurant and are not ready to part ways with your friends just yet but the waiters are making it very clear (stopping the music, putting the bill on the table when you haven’t asked for it yet etc) that they would like to close the restaurant. In this case if you’re dining in North Sydney head to Maisy’s for an after dinner coffee and chat.
Maisy’s Café is located at Shop 1, 165 Military Road Neutral Bay.
Café Hernandez: Café Hernandez has no locks on the doors as it is open 24 hours 7 days a week and with such a wide range of freshly roasted coffee its no wonder how the staff stay awake so long. At Hernandez you will find baristas that know how to make a good coffee at any hour, light snacks, fresh orange juice and rustic décor that makes you feel as warm as the coffee itself.
Café Hernandez is located at 60 Kings Cross Road, Potts Point
Pancakes at the Rocks: Isn’t it annoying when you’ve had a big night and wake up craving pancakes but you’ve slept in and your local café stops making items from the breakfast menu after 12pm? Although it is not open 24 hours, Golden Century also deserves credit for its after hours opening times. Golden Century serves delicious Cantonese seafood until 4am; the pipis in XO sauce are particularly good! Golden Century is located at 393-399 Sussex Street, Sydney.
Another honourable mention goes to the Crispy bakery in Newtown for opening 24 hours on Friday and Saturday nights. Perfect for a late night bread and butter pudding or neenish tart to snack on while you’re waiting for a taxi after a night out at one of Newtown’s many bars. The Crispy Bakery is located at 203 King Street, Newtown.
So for all you night owls out there, if you’re tossing and turning and sleep is nowhere in sight, get out of bed and indulge in a midnight snack.
